In 2007, Dr. Padmanee Sharma, MD, PhD, and her family laid the foundation for Abraham’s Tent Inc., an organization dedicated to expanding equitable educational opportunities across generations. The founders of Abraham’s Tent, originally hailing from Guyana, experienced firsthand the limited educational prospects in their homeland during that time. Upon relocating to the United States and benefiting from improved educational access, they resolved to secure this fundamental right for every generation, regardless of their circumstances.
In 2009, the Abraham’s Tent Scholar’s Academy was launched, offering after-school support to students preparing for Common Entrance or CXC exams. Initially hosted at the family's ancestral home in #74 Village Corentyne, Berbice, the program swiftly outgrew its surroundings. To meet the demand, a barn on the property was converted into a makeshift classroom, a solution sustained until 2019.
As the student population continued to expand, plans took shape for a new primary school building that could accommodate students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. However, unforeseen challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain constraints temporarily halted the construction project. It was not until the summer of 2022 that the primary school building was finally completed. Classes commenced in September, serving students in grades 1 through 4 initially. As of 2023, the Scholar’s Academy has broadened its offerings to include classes and extracurricular activities for students spanning grades 1 to 7.
In 2019 Abraham’s Tent also launched the Sharmallison Scholarship Program. This program offers mentorship and financial support for higher education to economically disadvantaged students in Guyana and the United States. Understanding the importance of scholarships, Dr. Sharma and her family had experienced the value of financial aid during their own educational journeys, enabling them to pursue successful careers in fields such as medicine, law, education, and business.
